Dollar Rally Cut Short As Risk Evaluated And Data Disappoints
It was bound to happen – especially with substantial event risk drawing so close. The three-day rally that pulled the US dollar up from its two-and-a-half month lows was finally put off its pace Wednesday as currency traders gauged their exposure to the events due in the days ahead (G20 meeting and NFP release ) while once again taking stock of consequential data crossing the economic docket.

With little more than 36 hours to go until the Group of 20 leaders convene in London, traders are still trying to discern which currency is best positioned to benefit from a positive outcome and which offers the greatest level of protection from a crushing disappointment. While the dollar can weather both scenarios given certain consequences, the focus and uncertainty on the US, its dollar and policies make it a risky bet. We have outlined the situation over the past few days; but circumstances are ever-changing and policy makers are taking advantage of the market’s and media’s attention to air their demands, tout their efforts and offer their forecasts ahead of the gathering. There was yet another round of this grandstanding today. Reflecting the resistance building in the Euro Zone, French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde said the country’s representatives would walk out of the April 2nd meeting if their “deliverables” are not met. While this was largely focused on beneficial, regulatory changes; it is nevertheless telling of the attitude that these officials will take to a conference that has historically fallen short in developing policy.
Along, different lines Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso has perhaps shown his lack of confidence in a global solution by announcing he has set his ministers to work to develop a third reiteration of financial stimulus by mid-April. This is a reasonable effort however considering the likelihood that officials will be able to come to an agreement over a one-day meeting and with respect to forecasts for global growth. The World Bank lowered its growth forecast for 2009 down to a 2.1 percent slump while the OECD projected a 4.3 percent plunge for its 30 member group along with expectations for 36 million unemployed within the G7 by the end of 2010. With all this under consideration, we have to remember that the US is the world’s largest economy and likely has the most to gain from global coordination. Should the world’s largest economies work together to correct some of the underlying, global problems, it could more surely lead to positive results and remove the defacto responsibility that the United States has taken to correct a world-wide problem in addition to its own troubles. And, lest we forget, there is the Russian and Chinese proposal for a new world reserve currency. If this suggestion is shot down, it could still hurt the dollar by stalling discussion on other topics.

When everything is said and done, the G20 meeting could have a substantial and lasting impact on the dollar’s future - but so too will the more mundane data that continues to cross the wires. The indicators released this morning reminded market participants that the worst of the recession has not passed us. Topping the docket this morning, the Conference Board consumer confidence report ticked higher for its March reading; but not enough to make up for that fact that it is just off a record low. Americans saw employment and conditions deteriorating to new lows through the month, but were slightly less pessimistic about the future. This is likely due to hope placed in the government’s efforts to date, but such influence through general data has not yet been confirmed. The S&P/ CS housing market inflation report was more straightforward on its negative bias with its 25th contraction on year-over-year data to a record low. Looking ahead to tomorrow, ISM manufacturing and construction spending data will redefine growth forecasts; but we should also take count of the preliminary jobs data ahead of Friday’s NFPs.
Euro Held Back As CPI Raises Specter Of Ongoing ECB Rate Cuts

We were reminded today that there is more event risk on Thursday than just the G20 meeting. For the euro, there is an event that can carry just as much market moving potential and ultimately provided a clearer sense of direction: the ECB rate decision. Still a day away, we were reminded by of the pending policy announcement by around of key data that will no doubt factor into President Trichet and company’s decision. Further diminishing the argument that inflation is a realistic concern for the medium-term time frame the central bank monitors, the Euro-Zone CPI flash estimate for March cooled to a 0.6 percent pace of year-over-year growth – its slowest pace on record. And, while inflation was subtracted from the equation, the intensity of the Euro Zone’s recession was leveraged. Germany, Europe’s largest economy, reported joblessness jumped 69,000 through the current month for the worst contraction in four years and fifth consecutive increase. With the unemployment rate rising to a nine-month high 8.1 percent, it is hard not to forecast a deepening recession for Europe and the need for further easing from the ECB.
Japanese Yen Torn Between Questionable Safety, Recession Reminders
Yen traders have historically ignored Japanese economic data because the currency was playing a larger role in the FX market (recently as a funding currency for the carry trade or a safe haven). Ever since the 4Q GDP numbers rocked confidence in the currency’s ability to offer shelter from the financial torrent though, we have seen a greater interest in fundamentals. Today’s flow reminded investors that Japan is not immune to the global financial and economic crisis; and moreover that it stands to perhaps suffer far more than many of its large counterparts. From a wide range of data, the consumer was one of the key focuses. The jobless rate rose to a four-year high 4.4 percent through February while household spending dropped for a 12th consecutive month and income contracted at its fastest pace in five years. The other highlight was factory activity. The first quarter Tankan figures generated significant surprise. The confidence gauge for manufacturers fell to a record low according to the survey owing to the severe domestic recession and plunge in export demand. This report led to an immediate 125 pip drop in USDJPY.
Canadian Dollar Takes Lead On Com Bloc With GDP Numbers

Over the past few weeks, the approach of the Group of 20 meeting has led FX traders to focus on the most liquid currencies and more vocal members of the assembly. However, we should not overlook the opportunities and threats within the commodity bloc. Considered to be two of the strongest economies in the global rout, both Canada and Australia showed there is always reason to doubt today. From Canada, January GDP dropped 0.7 percent to maintain the longest recession on recent record and print the worst year-over-year contraction since 1991. The Aussie dollar responded to RBA Deputy Governor Battellino’s forecasts for negative growth over 2009 and a round of concerning data. Private credit growth slowed to its worst pace since 1994 while retail sales dropped the most since July of 2000.

We're Paying Hundreds More for Our Insurance Than the Rest of the UK

CONSUMERS in Northern Ireland are being ripped off by having to pay hundreds of pounds more for insurance than the rest of the UK, according to new research.

The Consumer Council said Northern Ireland households on average shell out almost Pounds 300 more a year in premiums when compared with households in Great Britain, and for some that figure is much higher.
The findings, part of the Council's new report into the cost of coverage in the province, has led the consumer rights body to call for an investigation into why consumers are getting such a raw deal when it comes to insurance.
"The car, contents and buildings insurance market is clearly not working for consumers. Compared to Great Britain, households here are paying nearly 40% more, leaving consumers Pounds 160m worse off per year. While we are all hit hard, some households are hit particularly hard," said Eleanor Gill, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council.
She said the research found that consumers pay 84%, or Pounds 282, more on average for car insurance in Northern Ireland.

Households with car, contents and buildings insurance in rural areas pay 62%, or Pounds 362, and households in low income areas pay 48%, or Pounds 345, more than in Great Britain.
Breaking results down by region, the research showed a low income household in Belfast headed by an older person would pay Pounds 816 for their insurance compared to Pounds 575 in Glasgow, while a household headed by a younger person in a low income area of Fermanagh would pay Pounds 1,366 compared to Pounds 777 in rural East Anglia.

"A recurring frustration for consumers here is that many attractive insurance offers come with the tag 'not available in Northern Ireland'. Our research confirms that we do have less choice of insurance providers -- the maximum number offering quotations for car insurance here was 15 compared to 51 insurers in Great Britain," said Ms Gill.
"Another worrying aspect of this research is that a third of consumers do not have their homes insured. When asked why, they tell us that they can't afford it or haven't got round to it. There is a potential disaster waiting to happen for these households if something goes wrong, so there must be an urgent drive to increase consumer protection."
Around 30% of consumers here do not have contents insurance and 36% do not have buildings insurance.
Ms Gill said there are opposing views on the reasons why insurance here costs so much more.

"The problem could lie with the practices of the insurance companies, the legal system, the consumer or any combination of the above. Further investigation is urgently needed, particularly at a time when all households and businesses are trying to keep their costs down," said Ms Gill.
"We commend the associations for insurers and brokers and the Law Society for continuing to work with us as we try to understand why insurance costs more here. Consumers need insurance that is fair, affordable and that is appropriate to their needs. To that end, the Consumer Council will be focusing on encouraging more switching and a greater uptake of insurance protection for consumers."

Despite the higher costs and fewer providers, the council believes it is possible for people to save money when buying insurance by shopping around, rather than just renewing an existing policy.

Vorsteiner Dresses the BMW M3 Sedan with Dry Carbon Aero Kit

Oddly enough, Vorsteiner has released a new dry carbon aero kit for the 2008 BMW M3 E90 Sedan, a model that was in the market only for a few months as the Bavarian automaker replaced it shortly after its market introduction in early 2008 with the facelifted 2009MY M3 sedan. But anyway, the California-based tuner's proposal include various lightweight dry carbon components such as a trunk lid, a front-lip spoiler and a rear diffuser with integrated fins.

Giant Car Eating Pothole Swallows VW Golf in Ukraine

Talk about massive pot holes... What you see pictured above is most likely the result of a broken water pipe that caused this road which is located somewhere in Ukraine, to collapse and literally 'swallow' a bypassing VW Golf. Luckily, the passengers of the German hatchback managed to escape through the rear window. No word if anyone was injured or not in this bizarre accident.

Hyundai Concept Car with Gullwing Doors Scooped ahead of NY Show

As a rule, scoops come from professionals but once in a while, the goddess of luck smiles to ordinary readers such as Aaron who was fortunate enough to be in the right place, at the right time. The Autoblog reader snapped what is said to be a new Hyundai prototype model, parked on the road. In two of the shots, we get the chance to see the concept study's gullwing doors in action. We don't have any information on the prototype other than it will most likely make its world debut at the New York International Auto Show that runs from April 10 to 19.

My Two Dents on BMW's Fuzzy Logic Model Range

BMW's latest releases are a Family Guy episode on four wheels. If anyone has seen the episode of South Park parodying Family Guy's plot developments, you'll know what I mean; it's manatees in a tank fetching random idea balls and throwing them together. The manufacturer of vehicles touted as the "Ultimate Driving Machine" has gone off the deep end. People thought Mercedes was doing the same when they made the CLS for style-conscious consumers; Mercedes had the last laugh, though, walking away having created a totally new market. Will BMW have the same success? Me thinks not.

BMW, in a poor attempt to emulate Mercedes, has strayed from the beaten path in an attempt to capitalize on original ideas. The last few attempts by the Bavarians make me wonder exactly how much money they have in order to waste so much on ugly, redundant products in these trying times.

Take, for example their sport utility (oh, I'm sorry, activity) lineup. God forbid buyers confuse these vehicles with something having utility. Other than the X5, these vehicles are highly questionable. Large and midsize SAVs; ok, I understand these markets exist. "Slightly-smaller-than-midsize" and "coupe"; you lost me.

While the X5 and X3 move up in size, apparently a "slightly smaller than midsize" SAV is needed to fill the gap left by the hardly successful X3. The upcoming X1 (basically a less manly version of the X3, if that's possible) is a "Sport Activity Vehicle in the premium compact segment". Jesus, now they're just making things up. Premium Compact Sport Activity Vehicles? Let's just call it what it is: pointless, and fugly to boot.

What about the X6? It's a Sports Activity Coupe. That doesn't even start to make sense, considering the fact that it's a four-door SUV. What do you get for your $55,900 entry price? Room for four, minimal cargo space, and a cramping roofline, not to mention one ugly mother. What's worse, Acura (in yet another attempt to reach top-tier status) has decided to copy it. I'll chalk that one up as a wasted effort, guys.

What is the X6's purpose? Well, no doubt it'll do a great job of rubbing pointless excess in everyone's face, but that's about all. I recall one commenter on the web thanking BMW for creating a new class of douche with the X6. Nail on the head, sir, nail on the head.

And BMW's cars? Well, time was BMW sedans could do no wrong. Alas, ladies and gentlemen, you must not have noticed the latest eyesore brought about by dropping the X6 a few centimeters: the 5-Series GT. The only nifty part about the whole shebang is the rear hatch; that's where it ends. The GT is apparently targeting the three people who want a sedan with just a little bit more space, but who don't want to go all out for the wagon for fear they might appear too practical.

All is not lost, though. At least most of the cars and car concepts in BMW's future look promising. The 7 has gotten some of its elegance back and the new Z4 is a looker. Then we have the latest rumor of the Z2, which makes green look damn sexy. If BMW keeps up with ideas like this, perhaps I can look past the absurdity of their utility-lacking activity vehicles.

Photo Galleria: Alfa Romeo's Turbocharged 159 1750 TBi

At the recent Geneva Salon, Alfa Romeo introduced a new 1.75-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine for its 159 sports saloon and Sportwagon models that adopt the same designation as one of the most well known sedans ever made by the Italian firm, the 1750 Berlina that was launched in the late 1960s. With the new engine that develops 200HP, the front-wheel drive 159 1750 TBi accelerates from 0 to 100km/h (62mph) in 7.7 while its top speed is 235km/h or 146mph. If you follow the jump, you can check out the new, wallpaper-sized gallery of the 159 1750 TBi as well as photos of its equally seductive 1960s predecessor, the 1750 Berlina.
