Rims for Truck

Rims for Truck
Northern Exposure

Who better to craft a light-weight sprinter than our neighbors to the north? Canada features some of the most demanding, versatile terrain in the entire world and fortunately for the rest of us, their residents are passionate about the sport. Vancouver's Rocky Mountain may be best known for their higher end aggressive trail bike frames, but don't let that fool you into believing their more budget friendly Element line plays second fiddle.

We spent a few weekends ripping up the flooded New York back-country with Rocky Mountain's Element 10. At roughly $1700 this mid-priced dual suspension beauty exemplifies the Canadian philosophy of light weight frames that are deceptively durable. Although marketed as a slightly heavy XC rig, our testing revealed a bit more to the story. The truth of the matter is that although heavy for an XC machine, the Element can serve double duty as an extremely light trail bike and an incredible all day climber.

Lets Talk Specs

Our Element 18 inch Easton aluminum frame came equipped with Marzocchi's Grand Fondo Race 3 (105mm) of frontal squish and a (100mm) Fox Float R (rebound adjust) in the rear. Like the frame, Easton is responsible for the bar, stem, and seatpost. Shimano Deore shifters and front derailleur mate with an XT rear. Braking is accomplished via Hayes Sole hydraulic discs front and rear. Finally IRC Serac XC tires come wrapped around sturdy Alex DP17 rims. Total weight was a tad over 29 lbs.

Initial Impressions

Climbing into the cockpit of the Element is a reminder of the bike's original place in the market- as there is definitely an air of cross country heritage in the bike's layout. For starters, the bike feels tall and lanky with a particularly high top tube that may have male riders a bit nervous about slipping off the saddle. The reach across the fairly long stem and to the sturdy Easton riser bar stretches the rider pretty far forward. Lifting your feet onto the M520 pedals immediately takes the strain off the lower back and transforms the initial stretch into a head down, charge position. The bike hides its girth well by distributing its weight well across the chassis. Despite feeling tall initially, the bike's true flickable personality is revealed after only a few rotations of the cranks.

On the Trails

We began by navigating through some pretty technical double track that dumped into farm truck field roads before finally tapering off at the base of some greasy clay assents (three inches of downpour a day prior had the clay base of the hills glistening).

Through the technical portions, the Element managed to put on a pretty decent performance. The rather stretched out riding position comes to haunt the bike on some of the really technical, foot dabbing terrain. However we do have to mention that the frame's geometry is very well suited to the smooth stroke of the Marzocchi GF3 and the plush Fox Float. Our own affection toward just about anything that rolls off the Marzocchi line has only been strengthened by our test of this Rocky Mountain. Roots, rocks, and tricky lines each fell victim to a very plush and active suspension design.

Along the flat fields this bike loves to sprint. Any complaints of the riding position in the technical stuff were quickly forgotten once a little speed became possible. Each pump of the pedals results in a steady, almost metered burst of acceleration. And suddenly, in an instant, the beauty of the engineer's vision becomes crystal clear. A long, low slung body posture keeps the wind flowing over your back and the cranks spinning with ease. The Element 10 chassis flies a steady line, even over light chop we experienced no stutter or deflection.

Our last portion of the terrain trifecta would be the ultimate test for any bike. We came to a halt at the bottom of some overgrown hilly singletrack. Beneath the dense weeds was a foundation of slippery gray clay from a few days of relentless rain-fall. With very little momentum to fall back on, we began pounding our way skyward into the brush. So how does the Element 10 climb? Like a hard-tail! Taking a bit of the Fox Float's rebound out results in an excellently proficient climber. Thanks to the generous frame geometry, standing up to pump on the hills is quite rewarding. RM's take on the single pivot frame-work equals no pedal bob and a rear tire that stays well planted. Our only suggestion would be considering a more aggressive tread tire, something along the lines of WTB's Weirwolf DNA, if continues swampy or technical terrain happens to be on the menu.

Drafting the Details

Braking was definitely up to par. As always the case with the Hayes Sole hydraulic systems, squeals and moans are very common during initial burn-in but after about an hour- watch out! The bike's stability transfers well to the brakes' grip and modulation. The Marzocchi Grand Fondo Race 3 continues the tradition of Marzocchi's excellent progressive suspension and matches perfectly to the capabilities of the Fox Float R. On paper the scales aren't as good to the Element 10 as the frame actually works out in the real world. All 29 evenly spread pounds are carried through the bike's center of gravity quite well.

What Do We Really Think?

Rocky Mountain understands the game. Even in our moments of doubt, the Element 10 stood its ground and waited patiently for us to fall under its spell. The reality is that this bike has a sweet spot in the form of wide open spaces, zipping speeds, and power climbs. Riders quick to judge may not understand the Element's depth on a short parking lot demo or even a swapped loop with a close buddy. Take the RM where it wants to go and let it get to work- any initial disappointment will be immediately forgotten.

Zynga starts prepaid-card sales in Asia

Zynga will start selling prepaid cards containing credit for its in-game currency in six Asian countries from today. The San Francisco social gaming giant is partnering Malaysian company MOL to sell the cards, known as Zynga Game Cards. The cards will be available in more than 500,000 MOL outlets in Malaysia, Singapore, India, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand.

Zynga is introducing its Game Cards as part of a wider effort to expand its user base in Asia. Ryan Linton, a Zynga senior director of business development, said that the company had “millions of users” in Asia, although he declined to give figures for specific countries. Zynga has introduced a Bahasa Indonesia version of its latest hit game, Cityville. Linton said that a Bahasa Malaysia version will be released soon, among other localization efforts, which will include virtual items customized for Asian audiences.

“We’re taking Southeast Asia very seriously. This region is of major importance for Zynga,” he said.

Zynga’s Game Cards will be sold in denominations of USD2, USD5 and USD10. The denominations are smaller than Game Cards in the US, where users can buy USD25 cards, because users in Asia prefer to make smaller transactions, according to MOL’s chief executive Ganesh Kumar Bangah.

“Micro-transactions are more popular in Asia,” he said. “We may look at making bigger denominations available later.”

Ganesh also said that MOL has seen the volume of transactions in its prepaid cards business double annually. The company sells its own virtual currency, MOL Points and credits for Facebook. Its top markets are Malaysia and Thailand. MOL also owns the social network Friendster. Ganesh said there are no plans for Zynga games to run on the Friendster platform at this time.

Ganesh and Linton made the announcement at a press conference in Singapore this morning. When asked by journalists, Linton refused to be drawn on potential acquisitions by Zynga in the region, saying only that the company was always looking for talent and that acquisitions were a natural part of the business.

TEAM PACQUIAO

I was able to dropped by in the Team Pacquiao's store at the mall in General Santos City, Philippines where my family lives when I visited them a couple of weeks ago. The store offers all Manny Pacquiao's souvenir stuff like tees, shoes, gloves, towels, bags, key chains, pens, mugs, and among others for a very pricey tag. But who cares he is Manny Pacquiao the boxing champion of the world. I wouldn't actually mind buying some of them cause my husband and I are his fans. We love watching Manny's fight.

Speaking of boxing Manny Pacquaio has a fight coming soon against Shane Mosley- my husband and I may not be able to watch the said fight at the arena live but thankfully we have Satellite TV to see it via PPV.  I'm pretty sure it will be another good fight of Manny since we know how great he is at it. Too bad my father will missed this- he loves Pacman whenever Pacman has a fight my father wakes up so early to prepare himself so he can watch the entire show through our aunts Satellite TV during those times.

Kia Optima

Today in our office everybody are in good moods because we learn that our bonus is going to be release anytime this week. You know when we have extra money we can easily think of unnecessary things to buy from that. In fact the girls (my colleagues) already planning for a cruise trip this month using the bonus they're getting. Sounds so much! Meanwhile, the guys are thinking to put their bonus money from their savings account so that if they have enough savings they can use it to buy a new Nissan Altima Coupe 2.5S car or Mercedes-Benz S1550. Well.. well... seems they have been planning on that thing for so long now cause soon they said they'll going to get it. Must be wonderful, I said. Good for them!

As for me, I'm not getting any car very soon. Am still happy with I have right now it may not like aston martin but really I have no major problem of my car so far, and I am glad that I won't be spending my extra money for any of that right now. I have to save more for it just in case. But for now- no. If  I were them, they should consider to think about the Kia Optima cause its very practical compare to the cars they've wanted. The Kia Optima is more engaging mid-sizers like Ford Fusion and most of all it only needs low monthly payments and maintenance. I'm just saying.

Mercedes-Benz CLS by Carlsson

German tuner Carlsson has introduced its own edition of the Mercedes-Benz CLS ahead of its Geneva debut tomorrow.

Carlsson's chief designer Rolf Schlepp has created a new aerodynamic kit that accentuates the CLS's coupe styling. That includes a front spoiler, an RS front spoiler lip (also available in carbon), stainless-steel grille inserts, rear spoiler and a rear apron with integrated diffuser.

For the performance tuning, Carlsson offers power boosting kits for several CLS engine variants, including a boost on the twin-turbo V8 of the CLS 63 AMG that dials output from the series' 557 PS ( 410 kW / 550 bhp) up to 600 PS (441 kW / 592 bhp).

On the diesel-powered CLS 350 CDI, the Carlsson C-Tronic control unit boosts the power rating by 20 percent to a total of 320 PS (235 kW / 316 bhp) and 780 Nm of torque (575 lb-ft) from the series' 265 PS (195 kW / 261 bhp) 650 Nm (479 lb-ft). The 0 to 100 km/h sprint time is improved by 0.3 seconds over the standard 350 CDI to 5.9 seconds.

For the exhaust, there's a stainless steel rear silencer and double-oval tailpipes, with Carlsson offering stainless-steel tailpipes as an extra option.

Alloy wheels in 1/10 design (five simple and five double spokes) can be had in sizes up to 20 inches.

The C-Tronic SUSPENSION kit is adaptable to the AIRMATIC suspension from Mercedes and can lower the car 30 mm.

Things remain as elaborate, and then some, on the inside. Carlsson uses top-notch materials for the cabin finish in leather and Alcantara with carbon and wood trims (wood inlays with a piano black varnish). The seats and door panels are upholstered in Carlsson Nappa leather with contrasting stitching. There's also an Alcantara sports steering wheel, brushed aluminum pedals and foot rests, and floor and boot mats with the Carlsson logo. Carlsson even informs us that drinking-quality water is used in the tanning of the leather. That's how refined this tuning package is.

Corpans Wants To Be The Quora of Enterprise Segment

Till 2010, Twitter styled micro blogging/collaboration platform were the talk for enterprise segment and 2011 will witness a lot of Quora like services being launched that will enable companies to create a knowledge bank based on employees’ activity.

CorpAns is a Hyderabad based startup that wants to be the Quora ++ for Enterprise segment. The product essentially brings an intranet+inter work place interactions and let employees ask questions within the private company network or within the Corpans network.corpans_logo

You need a corporate ID to get started and posts are grouped as

  • ASK:You can absolutely ask, anything under the sun. However, we strongly advise you to be respectful and responsible while asking anything. Please read a few dummy use-case scenarios, below, to understand “#asks” better.
  • NEED: Need a mobile phone, a place to stay or a tenant for your 2 bedroom apartment! Post it on Corpans and let your colleagues on Corpans help you out !
  • SELL: You can sell an item. Simply list original price/expected price/select the right category etc and list your item for sale.

The Users are grouped based on their Company and Location. Private posts are visible only to the colleagues (i.e, same @CompanyName id). Public posts will be visible to all the people from given location.corpoas

The service is essentially a QnA+Classified service for enterprise companies and the core idea is to build a trusted network of individuals who will answer each others’ query (like StartupQnA.com) and in turn, build a knowledge bank for companies/projects.

Once you start using the service, Corpans will send you a collated digest every day and hopefully, you will have lesser emails to read thru’ (i.e. improved productivity).

Feedback/Suggestions

The service is at a very high level right now. The service expects users to create account (using company id), though if they really want traction they need to sell this to CXO/IT departments and integrate with existing user ids.

There are enough collaboration tools available for enterprise [see this list of Free Collaboration and Sync Tools for Startups, Free Tools for Startups – How to Grow without Spending in IT, Free Web Video Conferencing Tools) and several startups (BootStrapToday, Dunnitt, PebbleTalk etc) are already operating in this (i.e. enterprise collaboration) space.

The earlier buzz was ‘Twitter’ like collaboration and is slowly shifting towards QnA based knowledge management platform – thought the adoption of these new platform has been very namesake and limited to few geographies (and companies) only.

Apart from adoption challenges, i.e. you are expecting employees (and their managers) to change their behavior most of these services end up competing with a lot of free tools available in the market. So unless there is a huge differentiation (of support/integration with existing systems like ERP/CRM/HRMS etc), moving upwards in the enterprise maze is a huge challenge.

What’s your opinion on Corpans?

[Corpans is started by the same team that TweetKnot, a startup that received a bit of bad love from Facebook and Twitter because of its ‘Tweet’ name.]

Reliance Launches India’s First high-end CDMA Android Handset – Galaxy i500

The first of the CDMA Androids is finally here in India and you can get it with Reliance. The handset is manufactured by Samsung and comes as an addition to its already widely acclaimed Galaxy range of phone. This one, dubbed the Galaxy i500, shares the same model number as the US counterpart, the Galaxy Captivate. The phone truly deserves the Galaxy badge as it boast features that no other android CDMA phone offers in India.

Here’s the specs and features that make it a phone to watch out for:

clip_image001clip_image002

clip_image004

This phone ( also referred to as the Galaxy S CDMA), comes with a 4 inch super AMOLED display with fabulous picture quality. It also has a 5MP rear facing camera with power LED flash for a great picture and video recording experience. The body is slim and fits nicely into your hands. It charges through a mini-usb port ( a standard adopted by most manufacturers ), and also has a 3.5mm jack for audio output.

The galaxy i500 is powered by a 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM memory which means it is designed for great multimedia experiences. It plays almost all formats of audio as well as video. The internal memory is 2GB and a 16GB micro card is bundled with the phone, that is expandable to 32GB, making the storage capacity a respectable 34GB.

The handset will be shipped with android version 2.1 (Eclair) and will be upgradable to version 2.2 (Froyo). It offers a host of entertainment as well as productivity features including playing streaming media, email, office suite, maps and navigation and more. It will be able to leverage its 3.1Mbps internet speed to great effect making it a perfect phone for office as well as entertainment.

The phone will be available with Reliance CDMA at a price of 25,000.

One feature that the phone is missing is a front facing camera, which means there will be no video calling. This may be a deal breaker considering the price range.

All in all a good phone that had the potential to be great but loses out by a whisker. What’s your take?

RIP Paypal in India. [A Freelancer Speaks up]

Today is the D-day for Paypal in India. Well almost.

Unless you are a non-serious freelancer, you won’t bother. But if you are a serious one – you need to take note of today [by the way, we are surprised that Paypal hasn’t cared to share the update about this deadline on the company blog or via any other communication medium].

From March 1st, you won’t be able to receive more than $500 in your Paypal accountpaypal_dead_end and worst is that you cannot keep money in Paypal balance for more than 7 days.

PayPal will not allow users in India to receive more than US$500.

Starting 1 March, 2011, PayPal customers in India will not be allowed to receive payments for any export-related goods or services for an amount exceeding US$500 per transaction. This change is to ensure that we continue to comply with the RBI Guidelines.
PayPal will not allow Indian users to keep money in PayPal balance.

Starting 1 March, 2011, PayPal customers in India will not be able to keep money in their PayPal account balance. Instead, all money received into a PayPal account must be transferred to a customer’s India bank account within 7 days from the receipt of confirmation from the buyer in respect of the good or services. This change is to ensure that we continue to comply with the RBI Guidelines.”

While RBI suggests that Paypal has violated FEMA, the situation hasn’t improved for Indian freelancers who depend solely on sites like oDesk/RAC/foreign clients for a universally accepted payment service.

“It was observed that a few OPGSPs (Online Payment Gateway Service Providers ) have not only facilitated conclusion of the transactions but also allowed exporters to retain the export proceeds abroad without repatriation resulting in violation of the provisions of FEMA, 1999. Acknowledging however the importance of the services provided by the OPGSPs to the exporters, particularly in facilitating small value export transactions, it has been considered necessary to issue a set of guidelines to cover such e-commerce arrangements.” Paypal RBI Issue–Paypal Violated FEMA Act [RBI Circular]

S Mohan Ramkumar, a freelancer shares his view on the entire Paypal standoff:

I intended to open this article with a quotable quote, but then the ridiculousness of this RBI witch hunt speaks for itself. PayPal and RBI have been engaging in this drama every few months for a couple of years now. It me took me a year of hard work to build a writing business and all my income comes from abroad. Meaningless charades like this may help RBI look busy but puts undue pressure on freelancers and outsourcing companies.

Businesses can hedge the risks of a fluctuating dollar, but cannot hedge the rick of stupid decisions made my bureaucrats earning a steady paycheck every month, thanks to the taxes I pay. I could just give up and go back to a 9 to 5 job, no big deal. But a dream to be independent and have a brand on my own will get slaughtered in that process.

The recent announcement restriction transaction limits among other things is not PayPal’s fault (for once). RBI babus engage in on again and off again efforts to prevent illegal monies from coming in & going out of the country. They have put to use their infinite wisdom and added a bottleneck just because there wasn’t one in the first place!

The Questions

What good do they think the cap on payments ($500 per transaction) is going to do? Stop terrorists from getting foreign funds? To prevent people from sending black money aboard, wash it and receive it back in white? That’s hogwash. The recent printer cartridge bombs stopped by US authorities took less than $150 to make. So there goes the first stupid argument.

Coming to putting a stop to the Hawala transactions, there already is a withdrawal cap of $ 2500 per month for PayPal accounts. Do you know of any black money dealing crook trying to sneak one lakh a month at a time? Heck now that we are a super power and all, haven’t we upgraded ourselves to scams that are one lakh and 2 lakh crore is size?

More Questions

OK. For the sake of argument, let us assume that RBI’s decisions were backed by a mountain of evidence. What should a responsible arm of the Government should have done before, or atleast after choking the livelihood of thousands of freelancers? Shouldn’t they have suggested or created alternate and legitimate ways for freelancers & small businesses to bring in money from abroad? Is there an official release indicating if and when the restrictions will come off? Is there a warning indicating which services will be hit next? No. A big fat hairy no!

Online Wallets are not permitted in India. Good, we agree to obey the law of the land. But isn’t PayPal operating for about a decade now and RBI for several? Where they waiting for an
opportune moment until a huge number of self motivated individuals found a new way to earn money legitimately?

What About the Pro-RBI Argument?

That freelancers do not pay taxes? Well, S Mohan Ramkumar has a mega question :

Even if someone tried to do just that, it’s impossible because for about a year now, you will have to mandatorily submit PAN card information to PayPal. Without that, the account cannot be operated. I would say this theory of these bloggers are as preposterous as that of old school journalists rejecting bloggers as uninformed and clueless.

What Next?

Well, I pray that the $500 cap goes away soon and have asked my client to send multiple payments that does not exceed the limit. Again, am not sure if this loop hole will last or not. I have postponed plans to hire a couple developers to expand the business until things become a clearer. Good to see RBI is doing its part in creating new jobs!

In the meantime, I have created a Moneybookers account and have cleared with them that RBI restrictions won’t apply to them as long as my account is verified. Moneybookers use a different method (SWIFT) to transfer funds and might actually be alright. And am keeping my fingers crossed.

Now that RBI has successfully tackled freelancers, the existential threat to our economy, it is only reasonable to expect them to address lesser issues like money laundering and inflation. I have so much faith in them!

What’s your take? Are you looking at Paypal alternatives in India?
