Siemens sound censors for airbag deployment

Siemens VDO has designed an audio sensor system which deploys a vehicle’s airbags. The Crash Impact Sound Sensor or CISS deploys 15 milliseconds earlier than the conventional systems. It measures the sound caused by the panels of a car when they deform upon impact. This system is not only meant to obviously increase driver safety but to measure the severity of an accident to avoid unnecessary air bag deployment. It’s definatly an intelligent concept and a valiant effort to keep people safe. But when mechanics is involved, is a sound sensor a reliable mechanism to measure whether airbags should deploy?
