Social Entrepreneurship: Power of Profit for Social Good – 30 Oct

NUS BINGOThe “conventional” innovative approach of “social business” as “a non-loss, non-dividend company designed to address a social objective” creates serious limitations to accountability, scaling, attracting investors and competing in an agressive business world. As long as we remain true to a double-bottom line vision and committed to enabling and empowering stakeholders, profit generation and dividends can become the most powerful incentive towards efficient use of resources, transparency and realization of a growing social impact.

Social-Entrepreneur-in-Residence, National University of Singapore Entrepreneurship Centre, Carlos Miranda Levy will be speaking on Social Business is Dead, Long Live Social Entrepreneurship: The power of profit for social good. Carlos was also a Digital Vision Fellow at Stanford University 2004-2005, Google Developing World Scholarship recipient 2004, and acknowledged by CNN as one of Latin America’s top 20 most influential people on the Internet (2010).

About The Talk

Some common misconceptions on Social Entrepreneurship covered on the talk.

Social Entrepreneurship is not Charity or Philanthropy.
- you are not asking for donations to give handouts.

Social Entrepreneurship is not Social Business – a non-profit business aiming to do good.
- it is about making profit and maximizing efficiency while having a double-bottom line: profit and social impact.
- you can become wealthy by doing good.

Social Entrepreneurship is not Corporate Social Responsibility.
- Social impact is an “a priori” objective, not an “a posteriori” one or afterthought.

It is not about helping others…
- it is about enabling, engaging, empowering and connecting stakeholders.

It is not about teaching to fish…
- it is about enabling to take care of it, farm it, add value to it, market it and sell it.
- and if it fails, move on to whale watching or biomedical research on fish scales…

Speaker: Carlos Miranda Levy, Social Entrepreneur in Residence, National University of Singapore Entrepreneurship Centre.
