The danger here is that these cybercriminals who have stolen the database may use the list to send emails to Honda customers, tricking them into clicking on malicious attachments/link or sending off their personal information to the cybercriminals. They are able to identify themselves as Honda because they can quote your Vehicle ID Number so be aware of the emails you are receiving from Honda.
According to Columbus Dispatch, the database was stolen from a third-party company who sent out Welcome emails to customers who created website accounts with the firm.
2.7 million customers of American Acura were also exposed to hackers from a different list, although this list seems to be only email addresses included. However, these email addresses could be used to send spam.
