Asia-Pacific to lead the way in tablet shipments

Motorola Xoom, the new tablet device that would run Google's Android 3.0 OS

Research house Ovum predicts that the Asia-Pacific region will lead the way in global shipments of tablet devices in 2015, ahead of North American and European markets.

Sales of tablet devices is expected to hit 150 million units in 2015, with the Asia Pacific region taking up 35% of global shipments – an astounding growth from 2.8 million (or 20% of global shipments) in 2010 to 52 million in 2015.

Ovum forecasts that North America would make up 23% of global shipments, followed by Europe with 19%.

“This huge growth in shipments will be dominated by tablet-style technologies such as the iPad and will mainly be driven by consumers buying devices to complement their smartphones,” said its principal analyst Tony Cripps.

“This will either be as a ‘third device’ where there is a high-penetration PCs or the primary computing device where there is low-penetration,” he said.

Narrow race for tablet OS

As to who would win the OS wars on the tablet battleground by then, Ovum sees Google’s prolific Android OS dominating the market (with some help from Chrome OS), followed by Apple’s iOS.

This is a sharp turnaround from 2010, where 90% of the tablet market was taken up by Apple’s iPad. “By 2015 we expect this market share to drop to 35% and Google’s market share to rise to 36%,” said Cripps.

He also said that RIM’s Blackberry Tablet OS and HP’s webOS would find some success, but is expected account for only 29% of the market between them. Cripps believes that the dominance of Android and iOS in the tablet market boils down to the variety and availability of apps.

“… the dominant software platforms, Apple and Google, will attract the most attention from the cream of the developers. As a result they will have the best, most talked about applications and content and, when all is said and done, this is what people will consider when making a purchasing decision.” said Cripps.
