CIty Nomads is another new entry into the already crowded space of Groupon clones in Singapore. In an attempt to differentiate itself from the rest of the doppelgangers, the founders of City Nomads Alex Linton and Shavit Clein have positioned City Nomads as a premium luxury focused group buying site.
One wonders whether such a differentiation can actually be realized. Would luxury brands and sophisticated establishments risk the diminishment of their brand equity in the pursuit of customer acquisitions? Would the targeted (aspirational) high-brow individuals scramble for deals for these finer things just for savings? And would it be superfluous to add that maybe the perception of value when it comes to these final things is the exclusivity of its offerings, be it in terms of price or access.
The lifeblood of any deals site rather obviously are the deals. Do checkout the site and let us know whether City Nomads lives up to its ambitions of bringing privileged experiences to the restless denizens of our Singapore.
What are your thoughts about the Groupon clones in Singapore and their purported efforts to build a sustainable business? Do share them with us in the comments section.
And how do you think these clones can differentiate themselves? City Nomads for their part are trying to expand the site to be more than a deals site, with plans to build social capabilities where “Nomads” can befriend and add each other as friends on the site and share photos and experiences.
The founders
The founders are both expats who enjoy the finer things in life. Alex moved to Singapore in 2009 where he trained as a chef at the Coriander Leaf Restaurant in Clarke Quay. Having been exposed to the appreciation of wine at a young age, Alex is the designated guru on the subject and as a wine consultant, has conducted wine appreciation classes and led wine dinners.
Shavit Clien, the co-founder who seems to prefer whiskey, specializes in the field of customized payment solutions and with the City Nomads HQ team, will bring his area of expertise across to help businesses in the food and beverage industries.
