RIM says it hasn’t been cheating on taxes in Indonesia

At the BlackBerry DEVCON Asia in Bali, RIM’s Southeast Asia Managing Director Gregory Wade took the time to respond to certain claims by an Indonesian Minister which had surprised the Indonesian public over the past weekend. The minister tweeted that he would ban BlackBerry services unless RIM blocked access to porn on its devices.

Regarding the taxation issue which which was also brought up, Wade clarified that the company, “always has and will continue to operate within the laws set by governments around the world, including Indonesia. RIM dutifully pays all applicable taxes that are exercised from its business within the region in the same manner as all other importing manufacturers.”

He also responded to other concerns that were brought up, saying, “RIM established PT RIM Indonesia with the approval of the Investment Coordinating Board of Indonesia and opened a new office this past November. ”

In terms of community participation and the education sector, the company had made investments in local universities and developers through the Blackberry Academic Program and BlackBerry Partner Fund.”
