The combined desk-based and mobile PC market in India totaled nearly 2.6 million in units in the first quarter of 2011. This figure is a 6.2 percent increase over the same quarter last year, according to Gartner,Inc.
“This growth was primarily driven by the mobile PC market which grew 23 percent in the first quarter of 2011, when compared to the first quarter of 2010.
There was a slump in consumer demand in the first quarter , so the market did not grow as expected. Enterprise and small and midsize business ( SMB ) buying helped the market to achieve growth in the quarter. Government buying also contributed, as it was last year.”
The market leaders in PC shipment numbers are mostly multinational brands. All major PC vendors experiences double-digit growth in PC shipments in the first quarter on 2011. Dell, HP, Acer, Lenovo the top 4 PC vendors represent 50.4 percent of the total number of PC shipments in the first quarter of 2011. India’s homegrown PC vender HCL accounted for 7.1 percent of PC shipments in the first quarter of 2011.

PC sales is a positive story for India, compare this with Western Europe ( UK, France, Germany) and you see that PC sales were hit badly, as much as 18 percent. Consumers in these markets preferred to spend on tablet devices.
Tablet devices are still not as popular in India as they are in Western countries. Will mobile devices like tablets set to hit notebook sales like they did in Western Countries? What is your take?
