KAI Square, Singapore.
Kai stands for Knowledge with Artificial Intelligence, which focuses on processing intelligence surveillance data for corporations and users in both internet and mobile devices. Currently its target customers include transportation sector (bus operators), banks and telco/cloud operators.

On China opportunity, I agree with Kai Square that the opportunity in security / surveillance can be huge.  However, will the Chinese government be willing to outsource such national, sensitive business segment to a foreign country?

Word Engine, Japan. Want to pick up a new subject in a short period of time? Word Engine provides a solution that helps you memorize up to 99% vocabulary for important topics, from an e-coach, learning management system. Word Engine currently covers TOEFL, Gaokao etc.

While Word Engine seems to have tapped into the right market in China where test taking is in the central focus of many students, I’m not sure if I agree with the presenter’s point of view, ”e-learning is the end of teachers’ job”.

Mobimedia Inc – Canada. This company is focused on turning media into flash on iPhone. During a live demo, they showed that an iphone can now play a flash video over Safari browser. But to be honest, it wasn’t very clear to me what their business model is.

Smoov, Singapore. A mobile lifestyle rewards platform for community, content and consumers. Angel funded, Smoov has reached breakeven and seeking seed round financing at mn pre-money valuation.

Rewards platforms are growing hot in the US, and a key player has yet to evolve in Asia / China. I’m curious to follow Smoov’s trajectory!

Gexin, China. Focused on pushing SNS messages to SMS, and enabling free SMS. For example, when users receive messages on SNS such as Renren, Douban, Weibo, if they’re not online, their messages will be automatically pushed to their phone using Gexin services as SMS. To reply, users can simply respond via SMS and the message will be pushed onto the respective platform.

It’s refreshing to see finally, the first China-based startup to present at this competition.  With Apple and Android in total having less than 5% share of mobile phones usage in China, Gexin is targeting the grass root mobile users that may not be able to afford a smart phone. Definitely an undeserved market, and with a founding team of local technical expertise, it’s interesting to learn more about their development in the future.
