Angry Birds Wants To Beat Disney in China Within 2 Years

“You must feel like a Happy Bird in past week in China, right?” I asked Peter Verstabacka, the “Mighty Eagle” of Angry Birds on the stage of GMIC where we were both sitting at the panel The Battle: Marketspace vs. Operating System. He said, “I am happy to be here, but for Angry Birds, we would not say so. In U.S, people 100% can recognize us, but in China, only 30% maybe. We need more!”

Unlike many other foreign companies which are usually “shy” to expose their Chinese strategy when they first come to China, in past one week, Peter were extremely overwhelmed by interviews talking about their local strategy, meetings with potential partners and taking photos with their exciting fans.

Angry birds are flying into China, with an ambitious plan:

  • China Office – We have not decided the location yet, but it will be in either Beijing or Shanghai. It will be Rovio’s first office open in oversea market;
  • Company Positioning – We are coming to China not as a mobile gaming company, and we are an entertainment company. Our competitors are companies like Disney China, Creative Power Entertaining (the producer of Happy Sheep and Grey Wolf, a very popular animation) etc.
  • China team – We have got the first employee in China and we are starting recruitment soon. We are expecting 5-50 people in China office this year.
  • Milestones – For this year, we will do 100millions downloads in China, which should not be difficult; in 2012, we want to the leading foreign entertainment company in China beating Disney.
  • Partnership – We are open to any partnership in China. In the past week, Peter has visited varied potential partners, such as social network operators, phone manufacturers, toy makers, local app stores, ISPs etc, and he is also patient enough to talk to everyone who approached to learn the new ideas they proposed and suggested. “Yes! We should talk!” Peter did not waste any cool ideas.
  • A Chinese Company – Rovio in China will be a Chinese company. We are lucky because our birds are iconic and no need to worry too much about localization. But for sure, we will have Chinese-themed Angry Birds version, using Chinese social media for marketing strategy (Note, Angry Birds has set up its official weibo accounts on Sina with 97141 followers and Tencent with 206833 followers) etc. “We are not American companies…” Peter smiled.
  • From Mobile to Social – Popcap is working on local social networks to launch its social games in China. Peter admitted that Rovio will do social games too. He said, we are going to launch our own social games on a few popular international social networks by June, but for China I think we need it a few more months.

Angry or ambitious birds? How successful will Angry Birds be in China, you think? Please do leave you comments!

Labor Day Weekend Getaway? The Current State of China Online Travel Market

Amidst an exodus of city-dwellers during the Labor Day weekend, China online travel sites are fighting to secure a slice of the burgeoning individual travel market. On April 20, online tourism ordering service website, Yeex.cn. launched. Yeex.cn provides a platform for individual tourism and comprehensive route solutions by offering a variety of tourist resort products and promoting high quality group/individual travel routines and packages.

That came after the launch of Ctrip’s subsidiary site Lvping.com in early 2011, 17u.com rebranding in March, Tuniu‘s Series C funding and LvMama launching a “travel strategy” section. According to a report on Chinese Travel-related E-commerce from EnTravel Group, the online travel market has reached Rmb 39 billion in 2010, up 42% from 2009. It is expected to double to Rmb 68 billion or over US$10 billion by end 2012. Amongst these sites, which can capture the increasingly savvy and sophisticated Chinese travelers?

Tuniu active users 500,000, revenue reached $61.6mn (Rmb400mn) in 2010

On April 12, Tuniu.com completed a US$50 million Series C funding from Sequoia Capital, the Lotte Group, DCM, and Highland Capital Partners. Tuniu.com CEO Yu Dunde said, Tuniu has transferred from its original role of “platform” to a “whole journey companion”. Tuniu is speeding up to set points of the enclosure and entering into the buildup track.

Founded in October 2006, Tuniu has offered online travel booking services and has now expanded into 16 cities. A key differentiator from other similar sites is that Tuniu deeply engage in all the procedures of customer’s traveling to ensure the best for customer’s whole travel experience. Relying on this “whole journey companion” model, current number of Tuniu’s active users keeps around 500,000, and revenue reached Rmb400mn in 2010.

Tuniu also started to target corporates and group travels as their chief clients to provide considerate cloth-custom-tailor-like customized service. Corporate travels currently represent around 25% of Tuniu’s customer base.

Daodao.com – from TripAdvisor translation to travel online media company

When first launched, Daodao’s strategy was to translate some of the reviews on TripAdvisor into Chinese, and based on that foundation slowly built up reviews from Chinese members. The company sold 30% stake to Tencent at Rmb 50 million to 60 million in January 2011. Currently with over 45 million reviews, Daodao has evolved into a travel media company, which does not directly sell travel services or products.

However, Daodao currently faces the issue of neutrality of content due to its relationship with eLong.com (elong is the first recommended booking engine of Daodao) and advertisers. Its CEO has been actively clarifying and setting up internal scrutiny units.

Lvping – Ctrip’s protege?

Launched early 2011, Lvping (“Donkey Review”)’s Alexa ranking has risen from sub 1million to within 1000. There has been concerns over Ctrip’s monopoly playing a negative role on the trajectory of the site, yet it seems that Lvping is off to a strong start.

YiQiYou (17u.com): China’s first real-name travel blog

Considered a late comer to the online travel space, YiQiYou (“Travel Together”), formerly rebranded from similar meaning but more seriously sounding name TongCheng, is mired by the lack of Daodao’s early mover advantage and Lvping’s strong backing. However, its innovative marketing campaign, such as the blogging contest in late 2009, was well recevied. And its recent move to a real name based (versus Daodao’s alias based) review system has enforced accountability of comments.

Yeex: the latest addition to the pool

How can Yeex fit itself in the market and get a piece from the cake? Yeex’s parent company, etpass was founded in 2005 and initially focused on e-tickets online booking, online check-in, hotel booking, and business travel consulting. For Yeex, the company has secured funding of US$30 million from financial companies including JTB,  Nomura and Marubeni. With the strong financial backing, it is yet to be seen what will differentiate Yeex from its competitors.

In an effort to expose the underreported truth behind the government’s corporate average fuel economy ratings and to define more accurate fuel economy estimates, the team over at Cars.com has created their own True Mileage Index. The consumer website points out the flaw behind CAFE is that the adjusted calculations misrepresent the numbers posted on new car windows, and the actual fuel economy consumers will realize on the road Like the CAFE calculation, the True Mileage Index analyzes a number of factors. However, Cars.com places more weight on actual sales volume, and less on alternative fuels Their math places Honda’s True Mileage Index at a more realistic 24.9 mpg. In a nutshell, don’t get overly excited when you hear that the 2020 CAFE number is going to be 35 mpg -- it’s likely to only increase your future vehicle’s actual fuel economy by a few mpg.

Feidou, Kaixin001′s New Product for Mobile Group Chat

Facebook acquired Beluga aiming at mobile group chat. We have not seen anything came out yet, but most likely it is going to integrate group-chat feature into the Facebook mobile app. It seem that Kaixin001, the Chinese social network has done it faster. Feidou, Kaixin001′s group chat product, is available on App Store

We questioned about Haibei not being integrated into Kaixin001. Again, Kaixin001 decided to launch this group chat feature as a separate product, instead of integration into its mobile app. On Feidou you can invite and chat with your Kaixin001′s and Weibo’s friends as well as your phone contacts (by sending sms invitations). Right now, Feidou allows max 50 users chatting at the same time. Like other group chat apps, users can also share images easily on Feidou. We talked about Kaixin001′s another new product, Haibei, the web-based group focus social networks. Feidou seems a good complement to Haibei on the mobile site, although we could not see any integration so far.

Feidou is also available for Android, Symbian V3. We also heard that the coming release will add voice chat feature, just like Talkbox. That would be quite interesting feature for Kaixin001′s millions of users.
