Toyota's Global Production Soared Sharply By 83%


Tokyo - A Japanese car manufacturer announced that total global production rose sharply during February 2010. Toyota's global production soared sharply by 83% compared to the same month last year.

Toyota's success selling 655,180 units during February 2010. Toyota Motor Corp. is still struggling to restore its image after the storm hit the giant recall of the automotive world recently. The increase in the number of Toyota's production in February is good enough despite the temporary closure of factories for five days in early February. Toyota recently announced a temporary production stop in Europe in April and May.

The main rivals Toyota, Honda also recorded an increase in production, which rose 49.3% from a year earlier to 284,711 units. Nissan Production also rose 72.4% to 270,366 units.

Seven Cars Used by American Presidents

Do you know what cars are never used by all U.S. presidents from the past to the present. This time I will give a review article about it. Here's a list of cars that used to be president of the United States for duty along with their descriptions.

1939 Lincoln "Sunshine Special"

During the early years of the automotive age, presidents got around in standard production cars. Then, in 1939, the specially built "Sunshine Special" entered the Secret Service's fleet.

Based on a Lincoln K-Series chassis with power from a V-12 engine, the Sunshine Special (so named because its top was virtually always open) was built with both security and convenience in mind. Security was paramount because Franklin Roosevelt had already survived an assassination attempt in 1933 while giving a speech from the back of an open production Buick convertible. Convenience was important in order to get the wheelchair-bound Roosevelt in and out of the car while maintaining presidential dignity.

Stretched out over a massive 160-in. wheelbase, the Sunshine Special's armored body, built by coach builder Brunn in Buffalo, New York, had oversize rear-hinged rear doors. In 1942 the car was updated with that year's new front end. Various armor-plated elements were added at that point, and improved bulletproof glass was installed. After Roosevelt died in 1945, the Sunshine Special remained in presidential service until 1950. It's now in the collection of the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.

President Harry S. Truman, legend has it, had a strong dislike for General Motors products because he was denied use of them during his 1948 presidential campaign. So when it came time to replace the Sunshine Special, it was Ford's Lincoln division that got the job.

A stretched 1950 Lincoln Cosmopolitan (with a 145-in. wheelbase) was ordered from Ford and provided to the Secret Service for a nominal lease fee. Still a convertible for parades, the Lincoln was modified in 1954 with the addition of a large "bubbletop" canopy after President Dwight Eisenhower realized during a rainstorm that with the top up no one could see him.

The Bubbletop, as it became known, remained in Presidential service through 1965 when it too was retired to the Henry Ford Museum.

Since this was the car in which John F. Kennedy was riding in on November 22, 1963 when he was assassinated, it will forever be entangled with tragedy. Still, it's a car worth appreciating outside the context of that grim day.

Starting with the truly beautiful, new-for-1961 Lincoln Continental four-door convertible, Hess and Eisenhart of Cincinnati stretched the car a total of 33-inches both between the front and rear doors and behind the rear doors to both add space to the passenger compartment and make the car a true limousine. A metal hoop just behind the driver and over his head gave the President something to hold onto while standing during parades (as Kennedy did while visiting Germany during the summer of 1963). In addition, the rear seat could be raised in order to give crowds a better view of the President. Power came from a standard 430-cubic inch Lincoln V-8.

After the assassination, the SS-100-X was rebuilt, armored, fit with a permanent bulletproof hardtop, and returned to the presidential fleet. Though superseded by another Lincoln in 1967, both presidents Johnson and Nixon used the SS-100-X before it was retired to the Henry Ford Museum in 1977.

Built over three years by the Ford Motor Company (its serial number indicated that it was a 1970 model, but the original styling was from '72), this is the limousine that protected both Presidents Ford and Reagan from would-be assassins' bullets.

During a 1975 assassination attempt by Sara Jane Moore in San Francisco, Secret Service agents pushed President Gerald Ford into this massive 13,000-pound Lincoln and to safety. Six years later, and now decorated to look like a 1978 model, the Secret Service used this car again as a safe haven after John Hinckley attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan.

Powered by a 460-cubic inch V8, this was the last presidential limousine equipped with roof openings through which the president could stand.

1983 Cadillac Fleetwood

After decades of presidential Lincolns (named, of course, after a president), Cadillac was finally given the chance to produce a limousine for the secret service in the early 1980s. Appearing in 1984 were a pair of 1983 Fleetwoods built by Hess & Eisenhardt. Since the coachbuilder started with production Fleetwood limousines, the cars were stretched only 17 inches and their roofs raised three inches. Power for both came from Cadillac's own massive 500 cubic-inch V8.

Though awkward in appearance, the Fleetwoods provided excellent visibility for the president. Large greenhouses were made possible by the develop of 2 3/8ths inch thick bulletproof glass and powerful air conditioning systems that kept the cabin cool.

Upon their retirement, one of the Fleetwoods was returned to GM who lent it out to producers of the 1993 Clint Eastwood film In The Line of Fire. The other Fleetwood is on display at the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.

2001 Cadillac Deville

By the time of George W. Bush's inauguration, Cadillac no longer produced a full-frame rear-drive car suitable for conversion into a presidential limousine. Meanwhile, the Secret Service's safety requirements for the limousine had grown ever more ambitious and, well, weighty. So when the Bush DeVille debuted--it really wasn't much of a DeVille at all.

Informed speculation had this Presidential limousine built atop the frame of GM's full-size SUVs--like the Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade. Besides five-inch thick armored doors and bulletproof glass so thick it blocks out parts of the light spectrum, Bush's DeVille was rumored to feature a self-contained passenger compartment with its own secure air supply, run flat inner cores inside the tires, and a big 454 cubic inch truck engine so the 14,000-or-so pound monster could push through any obstacles.

By the time of the Bush's second inaugural in 2005, Cadillac was ready with an updated fleet of limousines that featured styling that mimicked the DTS production sedan.

President Obama's new ride isn't much larger than Bush's Cadillacs, but it's apparently much heavier. A look at photos released by GM reveal a limo-looking behemoth running on Goodyear Regional RHS tires--that's rubber usually reserved for medium- and heavy-duty trucks.

Prototypes of the new Cadillac Presidential Limousine (there's no claim from Cadillac that it has any relationship with a production car) were often seen in the company of GM's TopKick medium duty trucks leading many to believe that under the new skin of Obama's commuter is the frame and drivetrain from the TopKick. That would make sense, since the weight of this giant has to be somewhere beyond 15,000 pounds and may be approaching a full ten tons.

Secrecy abounds about the latest POTUS ride, but rumors are that this one is the first to be diesel powered. The engine may be GM's familiar 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8, or it could be some even more powerful diesel build for large commercial trucks. While the chassis, suspension and drivetrain of the new limousine is all new, most of the body seems to derive directly from the previous DeVille and DTS limousines. However the styling has been revised using pieces from Cadillac's current line. For instance, the headlights, side view mirrors and door handles all come from the Escalade SUV. Meanwhile, the taillights, rear back up lights and third brake light all come from the STS sedan. In all, it's a surprisingly handsome conglomeration of pieces, even if it lacks the sheer beauty of Kennedy's Lincoln or friendly disposition of Roosevelt's Sunshine Special.

The Secret Service isn't saying how many of the new limousines are being built, but probably at least a dozen. And no, you can't have any of them. Unless of course, you're elected in 2012.

- Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe 2012

- Volkswagen New Mid Size Sedan

Toyota Auris




Update appearance seemed never to stop on models of Toyota cars. In 2010, that a turn facelift is the Toyota Auris. Six New Technology In Cars


Soon we will be ahead of the new year. For that in 2011 we will discover new technologies in 2011 car. There are six new technology in cars today. Some of them:
  
1. Electronic Sun Visor

Sun visors never quite hit the mark if you travel east in the morning and west in the evening. We've even taped pieces of opaque paper to the bottom of the visor in an attempt to block the sun. A corporate research project at Volkswagen is developing an electronic anti-glare system using an electronic matrix within the glass controlled by a computer to block the rays.

A sun status sensor and a sensor that determines the eye position of the driver both feed signals to the computer, which calculates the point of sunlight entry within the viewing angle of the driver's eyes. The computer then produces a dark "spot" in the glass electronic matrix to block sunlight at that location (similar to the automatic darkening of rear-view mirrors). The spot moves across the windshield as the car changes direction. Right now, the technology doesn't allow for use on all glass, but it would be a huge improvement over the archaic sun visor if and when it's implemented.

A computer calculates where sunlight would reach the driver's eyes and darkens a corresponding portion of the upper windshield to provide the driver a sunblock.

2. Family Tech

"Are we there yet?" It's a question every father hears at least 600 times every hour on a family road trip. In the past, dad would roll his eyes and say, "Not yet, sweetie." Soon, the kids may be able to answer their own question. VW's child navigation system is essentially a rear DVD screen with a simplified representation of the route, plus special descriptions of scenes along the route. A "time worm" on the screen "eats" away at the length of the route, so the children can see it decreasing. A cartoon character on screen plays games and asks the children to do in-seat exercises and even goes to sleep when the kiddies are napping.

Got kids that still need the child's seat? VW showed a special power seat that mounts to the second row. The system is controlled by the driver, who can raise the seat so a child can see through the windshield--or fold it back flat for naptime. Plus, the seat can swivel out, making it easier for any parent to lift the child in and out of the vehicle. Cool. A special seat back provides a kid-friendly navigation system, plus a footrest for tiny legs.

3. Traffic Decongestion

The freeway you drive everyday suddenly slims down one lane because of an accident--how frustrating. The cars in that blocked lane have to move over. So they inevitably cause a slowdown in traffic in all the other lanes. But is that slowdown really inevitable?

The German government is sponsoring an auto industry initiative called "ACTIV," intended to spur use of technology for traffic management and lead eventually to automatic guidance. As one of its contributions, Volkswagen's engineers produced a study that shows how to free up traffic snarls by having cars speed up at exactly the right time. It's basically what you've always wished drivers would do: speed up and let the other drivers in.

Here's how it would work: Instead of letting all cars slow down in the traffic flow, a car in the lane adjacent to the closed lane would be instructed to speed up just before reaching the snarl. That would create a space behind it for a car in the blocked lane--without coming to a near stop and trying to edge in at the last minute. A traffic management system, tricked out with cameras and computers to record and analyze the road, would provide instructions on when to stop and go.

A more effective system would assume semi-autonomous control of the vehicles approaching the bottleneck. This could be used with an advanced version of adaptive cruise control and interactive communication to a local traffic management system. The reality, of course, is that without fully automated highways, there's not much that can be done about a rubberneck at the site of an accident.

Roadside cameras and sensors would give a traffic center the ability to minimize slowdowns at lane blockages by broadcasting signals to drivers in still-moving lanes. A driver in a flowing lane could be instructed to increase speed at a blockage, creating a space from the vehicle directly behind. A car in the blocked lane could be alerted to the impending lane opening, then could quickly change lanes into the newly-opened space.

4. Hands-off Doze Control

Drowsy driving is a major cause of accidents around the world. Soon, sophisticated camera systems will be able to read highway markings and sound a gentle warning to alert the driver if the vehicle is drifting. But even more aggressive intervention is in development, and Volkswagen showed us a car that was able to correct its own path in such a scenario.

At the Volkswagen proving grounds in Germany, we tested the system at moderate highway speeds. We didn't exactly fold both arms into our lap and forget about driving--it is rather tough to trust a computer with your life--but it did work quite well. Here's how: Thanks to electric power steering, a computer can control the steering gear motor signaled by a camera system and another computer judging the situation. If the camera and sensors detect drifting outside normal driving parameters, it takes control. Although the VW system is aggressive, it can be overridden. For example, activating a turn signal or dialing in extra steering effort will disable the system.

Because of a lack of public acceptance, cars equipped with electronic steering have seen very limited computer intervention. It's usually just enough assistance to improve handling. Cars that take complete control away from the driver better be flawless. One of the most pressing issues is how to determine when the driver is losing attention or intentionally trying to switch lanes. So the first applications of this technology are likely to be paired with adaptive cruise control.

The car we drove actually used sensors to monitor a driver's heartbeat to determine if we were awake and alert or sleepy and dozing. As software engineers better learn such human performance, they can use all sorts of signals to activate or disable the system--body temperature, movement in the seat hands on the steering wheel, even eye movements. At this point the hardware is there, but we're just waiting for the right computer programs.

The active steering control system on this experimental Volkswagen uses on-board cameras to read lane markings and kept the test vehicle in lane, even on curves at highway speeds.

5. Cleaner Fuel

VW and the rest of the German auto industry are taking a hard look at synthetic fuel, made by solid-to-liquid or gas-to-liquid processes. Most of these methods, including improved versions of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis invented in the 1920s, use catalysts (usually iron or cobalt) to convert solids like coal and agricultural waste or natural gas into liquid fuel. Also under development is ethanol produced from cellulose (straw, wood and various waste materials), rather than from corn or beets, which affect food supply.

Biomass fuels, called "SunFuels" because of their renewable origin, are made by the same basic processes as other synthetic fuels. Synthetic fuel can be designed for the precise combustion characteristics needed for certain advanced engine technologies.

And what about hydrogen? Volkswagen is not particularly optimistic. The company has been developing a high-temperature fuel cell (so it needs far less cooling to continue working), but even VW engineers see fuel cells as 20 years away or more.

And as a VW engineer said, if lithium-ion or another battery technology can achieve an energy density to propel a car 200 kilometers (120 mi.) per 100 kg weight (220 pounds), "the fuel cell is surpassed." At this point, lithium-ion is at just 7 km (4.2 mi.) per 100 kg, and the ones in development will reach 21 km (12.2 mi.) per 100 kg soon. The research is apparently underway for 70 km (42 miles) per 100 kg performance in these batteries.

6. Future Powerplants

The near-term steps are to use fossil fuels more efficiently in piston engines such as Volkswagen's BlueMotion TDI and 1.4-liter turbo spark ignition engine. Adjunct to these, according to VW research chief Jurgen Leohold, are gasoline engines with start-stop capability, traditional hybrids and the "range extender." That's a plug-in hybrid with a tiny gasoline engine to recharge the batteries for distances greater than plug-ins alone can provide--similar to the Chevrolet Volt concept.

All vehicle manufacturers are developing Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engines that use spark ignition for heavy load operation but in light load can ignite a lean mixture throughout a cylinder without a spark. The "homogenous charge" is a uniform mix of air, fuel and up to 70 percent of the already-burned exhaust gas. Compression stroke brings the mixture to a controlled self-ignition state -- no need for a spark. Because of the uniform mix in the cylinder, there's no hot flame front, and the mixture burns almost instantaneously and completely throughout the cylinder. So there aren't any "hot spots" to produce engine knocking. The engine requires spark plugs for starting and heavy loads, but in HCCI mode, it improves fuel economy about 10 to15 percent--close to a diesel. It does require a "designer" gasoline, perhaps a synthetic gasoline.
