Water is the very essence of life. Water has always been perceived as a precious gift from the gods as it rained from the heavens.
Clean, fresh drinking water is essential to human and other living things. Access to safe drinking water has improved steadily and substantially over the last decades in almost every part of the world.
There is a clear correlation between access to safe water and GDP per capita. By the year 2025, more than half of the world population will be facing water-based vulnerability.
And by the year 2030, in some developing countries, water demand will exceed supply by 50%. Now, 70% of freshwater is consumed by agriculture i developing countries.
World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro.
UN-Water has chosen Clean Water for a Healthy World as the theme for World Water Day 2010. The overall goal of the World Water Day on 22 March 2010 campaign is to raise the profile of water quality .
